The title of this film is a direct allusion to the taboo - in Arab countries - of women hairs, which should be hidden, so that all the musicians who participated in the film refuse to wear the veil.

This title is an allusion to the erotic of the hairs.

This film is, in fact, a manifesto with several Arab disobedient women, singers, musicians and composers, originating of Mashreq and Maghreb. In contradiction with the assumed context of the current distrust vis-à-vis these cultures, the film wants to show the assertion force of these women, who struggle with determination to impose their talent, their art, their social commitment and their femininity without veil. It also aims to show how their creative force is based on new attitudes, but also on the power and the beauty of ancient poetry which reflect the great diversity of these worlds.

The film also has a direct political dimension since it was shot with musicians from several countries which are in great imbalance: Tunisia, Syria, Palestine. These violent contexts in which they live, or they fled, obviously have a significant impact on their art.

If I wanted to make this creative documentary that is because I wanted to respond to media discourse that currently overwhelm us. He seemed to me indeed an urgent need to speak otherwise of these Arab women, givers of wealth intelligence, sensitivity and delicacy that, based on traditional musical and poetic cultures claim with a great fighting freedom artists and women in political contexts particularly disturbed. But also because it is clear that the West in general, there is not too much noise around the Arab music, with the exception perhaps of Raï. Few programs on national radio or TV, few articles in major newspapers, including those focused on music.

Given all these negative assumptions, which are reinforced from recent events, dramatic and painful, events, often justified by virulent religious claims, it became necessary for me to take a course that we conducted - twenty-five years ago - my husband Daniel Caux and myself, in conjunction with Patrice Chéreau, Alain Crombecque and Catherine Tasca. These we had then proposed to organize in - Le Theatre des Amandiers in Nanterre - what they called "The Days of Arab Music". In April 1984 took place, the Maghreb : concerts bringing together musicians Algerians, Moroccans, Tunisians, Mauritanians, and in January and February 1985, the Mashreq : concerts musicians Egyptians, Lebanese, Syrians, Iraqis, Qataris, Sudanese : a total of twenty-five concerts bringing together more than three hundred artists.

This time, because of my natural empathy with the world of women ... I chose to focus that film on women intractable of Arabic music. Disobedient, those I followed are certainly vis-à-vis the dictates erected by societies reluctant to assist them in their desire to assert.

God or Allah know the dose of courage, determination and strength that was their, and their is always necessary, to triumph over time, their words, their femininity, their talent, their art !

The consideration of these struggles associated with their great artistic qualities, refines, I hope, an approach and an understanding of these cultures. In France and in Europe for decades, we are indeed living in a glaring paradox: we look increasingly to Indian music, world music, the black American music, while we do not pay much attention in music who are here with us or just on the other side of the Mediterranean. If we asked at random people in the street, I doubt they would give spontaneously name of some of the most important musicians of Arabic music, except perhaps Oum Kalthoum. Who mention the equivalent of Miles Davis or John Coltrane? Who mentions Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Sayed Darwishe, Riad El Sounbati, Baligh Hamdi Ahmed Khelifi, Asmahan and so many others? This ignorance is, in my opinion, evidence of a heavy cultural segregation!

With this film, I also wanted to give to see the great diversity of Arab cultures, I wished, by deliberately eclectic choices, and I would say extreme, I choice these five musicians and composers women, to help the questioning of these preconceptions.

How these women do to refuse the dictates of the religion, the family group, the company would impose? How do they express themselves ? How do they react to the revolts, wars, difficulties that affect their countries? Is their posture more difficult to maintain now than ten years ago? Thirty years ago? Since the wonderful Egyptian singer Oum Kalthoum, born in 1898 or 1902 (date uncertain) - including with an archive in the movie - disguised as a boy to sing while she later refuse to sing in front of veiled women. These are some of the questions I asked myself starting this film.
