Very early on, in Arab countries, poetry and music became feminine, although for a long time only slave women had the right to express themselves in performances given to men. Which is a very interesting paradox! But soon, the caliphs began to criticize this "laxity of morals" and, after the music had been tolerated, its prohibition was raised. With this film, I will show, also, how the alternations of forbidden and relative openings have been constant over time; even if it remains surprising that, so many centuries later, the posture of many Arab countries is again so often restrictive, reinforced by the fact that there are no Arab countries "simply" secular, in which the religious would not infuse all the laws and all the prohibitions.
How could, all these women artists, refuse the dictates that religion, society, and family group, wanted to impose on them? How did they express themselves, even now? In the current context - where so many wrong amalgamations are allowed around the violence of these countries - it seemed to me necessary to try to answer these questions and to speak "differently" of these women, and of these cultures.
This film will be sets out to trace the exemplary path, over the centuries, of several talented female musicians. For this, I will discuss the beginnings of the Arab empire in Medine - through Djamila in the VIIIe century -, at that time of deep middle ages in our countries - she conducted 150 women, thus becoming the first woman conductor, awarding prizes to her students: thus founding, in fact, the first conservatory of music, and organizing - in 752 - three days and three nights = the first music festival ! Then through its location in Cordoba, in Andalusia, I will evoke the great poetess Wallada - in the XI century -, who wrote and sang erotic songs, embroidering on her sleeves: "My kiss belongs to the one who desires it". Then video archives of the disappeared artists of the twentieth century will be integrated with current images shot in the present days and I will speak of Oum Kalthoum Asmahan, Warda El Djazaïria and the great “Grand Mother “ of Raï : Cheikha Rimitti. Finally I will film live artists: in Cairo, the very powerful and wonderful Egyptian rapper : Soska. I obviously found myself faced with the question of the "absent image" of this beginning of these time, so, to overcome it, I wrote a text in the manner of the « Thousand and One Nights », and I collaborated with a young Iranian visual artist in order to mix real images and drawings.
